Inuit Place Names of Nunavik Map Series

"We were taught by our ancestors the names of the land, lakes, hills and islands,

and we have an obligation to pass these on to our young people"

Samwillie Annahatak (Kangirsuk, March 1981)

(Ludger Müller-Wille, 1987. Gazetteer of Inuit place names in Nunavik (Quebec, Canada): iii).

Since 1983, Avataq Cultural Institute and many other contributors have compiled Inuit place names in Nunavik in order to safeguard this traditional knowledge. Place names were given to the land and have been passed down orally through generations. They reflect a strong understanding of the land and represent an important part of Nunavik’s cultural heritage and history.

These place names have now been made accessible through a variety map collections, available in different scales and formats. The main collection, Nunatop 50K Map Series, covers the region at a 1: 50 000 scale and represents a total of 648 maps. The other collections offer the same information in a number of different formats.
